In some cases different septs using the same surname arose in widely different areas. In other cases migration due to war dispersed them.

In the Gaelic period County Carlow formed part of the territory of Hy Kinsellagh. The Kavanaghs and the Kinsellas, both branches of the MacMurroughs, Kings of Leinster, ruled here. 
The Ryans "Lords of Idrone" are long established in Carlow, as are the Nolans, who are associated with the barony of Forth. The Dorans were originally a Laois sept but many migrated to Carlow in the late medieval period.<
